Beau Dixon

Beau Dixon is an award-winning actor, musician, playwright, music director and sound designer based in Ontario, Canada.

He is also the co-founder and artistic director for Firebrand Theatre, a Canadian educational theatre company, an artistic associate for 4th Line Theatre in Millbrook, Ontario, and a Slaight Music Associate at Soulpepper Theatre in Toronto. Recently, Beau has been commissioned as music director for Sheridan College, Lakefield College School and The Stratford Festival.

Currently, Beau is working on a variety of projects, including acting in film and TV roles, producing and writing plays, and composing and performing music for digital distribution, public live streaming events and corporate functions. Beau also offers online drama coaching, workshops, and music lessons.

Footnote to Freedom is a new musical about the life of Beau and Lance’s grandfather, who served in the number 2 Battalion, Canada’s only segregated Black Battalion in World War One.

After much critical success from last summer's performance of Freedom Cabaret: The Spirit and Legacy of Black Music, Beau Dixon returns with an exciting and intimate show exploring the triumphant sounds of blues, gospel, reggae, soul, jazz and the influence African American music had on western civilization during the Freedom Movement and civil rights era. Narrated through song and text, you'll hear the works of musicians, poets and activists such as Martin Luther King Jr., Stevie Wonder, James Baldwin, Harry Belafonte, Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, Maya Angelou and many others. Join us in Lazaridis Hall as we celebrate once again the history of Black music presented by some of Canada’s most talented singers and musicians.

From the moment Black people landed on North American soil, their music took root and became the basis or much of the popular music we hear today. There is an endless list of exceptional Black musicians who have been lost to history while their white counterparts gained fame. From church hymnals to the blues, from jazz to rock ’n’ roll, R&B and rap, we owe much of our musical history to Black culture, and it’s time to give credit where it is due.

Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story
